Cyprus is a republic, and island country in the eastern Mediterranean east of Greece, west of Lebanon. Syria and Israel, south of Turkey and north of Egypt. It is the third largest Mediterranean island. The total population of Cyprus is around a million, with about three quarters of this in the Republic of Cyprus and a quarter controlled by the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
The Troodos Mountains cover most of the south and west of the island of Cyprus and accounts for about half its area. Coastal lowlands, varying in width, surround the island. Cyprus has a mainly Mediterranean climate with rainfall mainly between November and March, with dry, hot summers, though there are variations in climate with altitude.
